Level Descriptions

Introduction

In your child's school report, you will see that we have given them a sub-level description in Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening and Mathematics.

We track your child's progress very closely and we use sub-levels to help you understand how your child is achieving. Children move through the levels as they progress through school. For example, a child would attain level 1c, then 1b, then 1a and then move onto level 2c. If you would like to know more about what your child can do at this level, then please read the information below. Alternatively speak directly to your child's teacher, who will be happy to explain.

What is the national expectation?

The national expectation is that every child will be achieving the following:

Year 1: 1b/1a

Year 2: 2b

Year 3: 2a/3c

Year 4: 3b

Year 5: 3a/4c

Year 6: 4b

As you can see in the table below. The yellow is the national expectation. Red indicates where a child is working below the national expectation in their year, and green indicates where they are working above.

Descriptions

If you would like to know more above what your child can do at the level they are working at, and more importantly, what they need to do to improve, then please come in and discuss this with your child's class teacher. We assess all our children and track their progress very carefully, so we are able to give you a very detailed explanation. Another good place to look is the National Curriculum website, which has a description for each sublevel.

We hope that you have found this information useful and can use it to help support your child's progress through the school. If you have any questions or comments, please do get in touch.
