I Can Be
Children love to imagine what they might do when they are grown up; they can form aspirations from a very young age. The world of work and jobs for the future is a dynamic place for our diverse young citizens. However, children can also develop stereotypes and give themselves low aspirations too. At KHEF, we are determined to raise the aspirations of our pupils, to encourage them to aim high and to recognise and appreciate the firm base of key skills which they learn at school, so that they can become successful in later life. Having completed the DfE backed ‘Start small, dream Big’ pilot, we are embedding careers related learning in our curriculum, alongside everyday classroom and school activities.
Our intent is that pupils grow in their understanding of their own skills, the world of work, and pathways to find meaningful work. During their time at KHEF, we aim to provide them with careers-related learning that includes: face to face meetings with those in a range of careers, career fairs to broaden their knowledge, connections between different subjects and the world of work, assemblies on inspirational people, an understanding of equity and a rejection of outdated stereotypes and bias, opportunities to ask questions and reflect on skills and interests, free clubs to develop interests, a love of learning and a proud understanding of ‘I can be…’
Asking questions about careers to do with writing:
Today we discussed our main character, George had. We then voted on which two qualities we thought were the most important for a leader to have. As a class we found that the most votes were for being Creative and Responsible. We then discussed this using our PSHE sentence stems. We also noted that George wasn't as good at communicating which we agreed was a key quality that a leader needs.
After, we discussed careers we could do linked to writing:

What skills do I need?
Year 4 looked at some different jobs and though about the importance of English-reading or writing-for each job. They went on to think of skills that they had already acquired themselves.

Meeting Medical Students
On Friday 24th November, we were lucky enough to meet some medical students. They taught us all about asthma.
After our asthma workshop, two Year 3 pupils interviewed the medical students about their career choices and journey.
“Did you always want to be a doctor?”
“I’ve always had an interest in helping others. I’ve also always liked science so I knew it’s what I wanted to do.”
“After the COVID-19 pandemic, I saw how important doctors are!”
“I actually didn’t always know I wanted to be a doctor. I had lots of different ideas. But my mum is a nurse and I’ve always liked the interactions doctors and patients have with each other.”
“How long does it take to become a doctor?”
“We’re all at different stages of our training but it will take 6 years for us to complete our current training.”
“How did you get to where you are now?”
“I did my A-Levels in Biology, Chemistry and Maths. I then did a Science degree at University.”
“My university course was Biomedical Sciences of the Body.”
“Where can you work as a doctor?”
“Anywhere in the world! That’s the joy of our job and what we want to do.”
“What type of doctor are you going to be?”
“I want to be a GP so that I can work in the community and help others!!
“I want to become a paediatrician so that I can help look after children.”
“I’m actually not sure what kind of doctor I want to be yet so I’m keeping my options open.”
“What do you like best about being a doctor?”
“I like helping and working with my patients.”
“I really enjoy seeing the human side of medicine.”
“It’s so broad, there is so much to enjoy!”
