Year 3 Spanish Work

AUTUMN TERM 2015
They enthusiastically started the year by learning how to greet each other and find out each others' feelings, names and ages.
They then had great fun choosing characters to introduce to each other and recorded their conversations using Puppet Pals.
This term Bats and Owls have been the latest classes to start learning Spanish at King's Hedges.....and they've been doing really well!
The children then had a go at developing their written skills by introducing themselves and their friends or family using speech bubbles.
After half term, Year 3 deepened their understanding of the Hispanic world by learning about key festivals and traditions from Spanish speaking countries, namely 'El Dia de los Muertos' and 'La Navidad'.
We held a competition to decorate their own 'Calaveras' (skulls) just like those used to decorate homes during The Day of the Dead.
We learnt that in Mexico children are taught to consider this time of year as a joyful festival to remember lost loved ones, rather than a time to be scared or sad.              Bats class then had a go at designing their own 'Altar de Muertos'.
At Christmas, we learnt about key events in the Spanish Christmas calendar and incorporated what we had learnt in our Christmas card designs.

See if you can spot the shoes that leave out for the Three Kings to fill (instead of a stocking) or the glass full of grapes that they eat at the strike of Midnight on New Years Eve to bring them good luck for the next 12 months to come!

SPRING TERM 2016
Did you know that Spanish children get their presents on the 6th January - 'El Dia de los Reyes' from The Three Kings?
This term, Year 3 have been learning about 'La Familia'; conducting surveys, playing games and recording conversations to develop their understanding of new nouns and gender.

¿Tienes una mascota?

We also learnt how how to ask and answer questions about pets in our families. It's amazing finding out how many animals some people have living in their homes!!

We had to use different verb forms in order to talk about ourselves and others.

Tongue twisters

We had great fun learning some tongue twisters to help us practise and improve our pronunciation of Spanish vowels. Have a listen to these girls reciting their tongue twisters - Don't they do well?

Did you know all nouns in Spanish are either feminine e.g. 'La hermana' (sister) or masculine e.g. 'El Hermano' (brother)?

SUMMER TERM 2016

This term our focus has been on learning about the parts of our face and body. Click on the links above to see the songs and rhymes that we learnt to help us learn our new vocabulary.

Year 3 have also been introduced to the work of a famous Spanish artist; Pablo Picasso, who was famous for his surrealist, colourful portraits.

We have been developing our reading skills by painting and creating Picasso style portraits and monster faces according to the descriptions written in Spanish.

Since half term, we have been looking at a story translated into Spanish 'La Oruga Hambrienta' (The Very Hungry Caterpillar). We focussed on reciting rhymes and playing 'bingo' and 'quiz race' to develop our knowledge of food vocabulary and then learnt the days of the week to help retell part of the story in our own. We're now working on writing our own versions of what we think the Hungry Caterpillar should eat every day to help practise writing simple phrases from memory and remember how to form plurals in Spanish (just add an 's') !!
